Building and construction covers a wide range of jobs in areas such as planning, engineering, architecture and trades such as painting, carpentry, plumbing, tiling, roofing and electrical – for both commercial and residential projects. Residential building includes the construction of houses, flats, units and townhouses. Commercial (non-residential) building includes schools, hospitals, shops, offices and factories.
A large part of the industry involves planning, which involves all of the work that goes into building and maintaining infrastructure such as our roads and streets, railways, power supplies, dams and sewerage systems. Everywhere you go, this industry has made a contribution.
There's also the design and engineering side of building and construction which offers jobs in areas such as architecture and building design, where you can specialise in areas such as environmentally friendly and sustainable housing design.

Plastering is one of the most important trades in the building and construction industry, and a big part of the end look and style of the building. But it's not just decorative — plastering also involves protective coverings for the interior and exterior of buildings and homes.
You'll learn how to read and interpret building plans, and carry out measurements and calculations to determine quantities of materials needed for a job. You'll also learn about erecting and dismantling scaffolding, working safely at heights to fix standard plasterboard sheets and paper-based cornices, how to prepare surfaces for plastering, and a range of tools and materials used in the trade.
