Please contact our Apprenticeship Office helpline on 13 19 54 or email apprenticeshipoffice@dtwd.wa.gov.au for further information about an EWT for your business.
Information Technology and Cyber Security
With the rapid changes in information technology (IT), and the need for greater specialisation within IT fields — for example; the growth of automation in WA's mining and resources and defence sectors, and advances in technology used in the healthcare and the logistics sectors — it's never been more important for businesses to have a well trained IT team. To support skills development in the IT sector, three new EWTs are now available in addition to the Certificate III and the Certificate IV in Information Technology EWTs already available— all with course fees reduced by up to 72 per cent, and all offering an excellent pathway for high level skills development and/or career progression into specialist or leadership roles to meet future business needs.
Certificate IV in Cyber Security |
---|
Ideal for both experienced and newer workers, the Certificate IV in Cyber Security qualification covers key cyber security concepts to mitigate threats, protect the business from security breaches, and develop systems to minimise vulnerabilities; authentication and encryption; network scripting; professional ethics; and security data analysis. Risk identification and mitigation is a key focus, with training including simulated cyber attacks for 'real life' training. |
Diploma of Information Technology |

Creative thinking, problem solving and decision making skills are also key focus areas for the training. |
Advanced Diploma of Information Technology |
For workers who are ready for leadership or management roles, including for complex projects, the Advanced Diploma of Information Technology is the qualification to choose. In addition to providing a high level IT skills and knowledge base, the course has a focus on business processes and improvement. Depending on the TAFE or training provider, you may be able to select units that align with your business operations and skill needs or areas of specialisation such as security, design and build network servers, advanced data management, and website development. |
Diploma of Applied Technologies (Applied Technologies Technician) |

Diploma of Engineering—Technical (Engineering Draftsperson) |
With the increase in automation and Industry 4.0 technologies, this is the EWT that will offer your workers a comprehensive range of theoretical and technical skills for the mechanical, mechatronic, manufacturing and maintenance fields. The training has a strong focus on transferring theory to real-life applications and problem solving. Units include engineering drafting and design; technical drawings and models; CAD systems; mathematical techniques and mechanics; pneumatic circuits; mechanical systems; and engineering project coordination. |
Defence Industry Existing Worker Incentive for technology skills
If you are an employer in WA's defence industry, the WA State Government's new Defence Industry Existing Worker Incentive (DIEWI) offers financial support for EWTs that support the skills development of existing workers into critical professional and paraprofessional roles with a technology and Industry 4.0 focus.
You may be eligible for up to $6,375 per EWT!
Three EWTs have been selected by industry as eligible for the DIEWI: the Certificate IV in Cyber Security, the Diploma of Applied Technologies (Applied Technologies Technician); and the Diploma of Engineering—Technical (Engineering Draftsperson).
Full details about the DIEWI program are available on the Defence Industry 'The Other Force' website
Early Childhood Education and Care
Childcare and early education services provide services that are integral to supporting WA's economy, and enable and support workforce participation for many in our community — hence the focus on skills development for this important industry sector. As well as ensuring your workers have the skills and knowledge required to meet regulatory requirements under the National Quality Framework, National Regulations and National Quality Standards; these EWTs will set your team up to provide consistent, quality care to best practice industry standards, and give your business a competitive edge through the provision of high quality childhood education and care services. They're also an excellent choice for creating a pathway for further learning and/or career progression for your team, to meet your future business needs.
Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care |
---|
Ideal for unqualified and/or newer workers, the Certificate III EWT covers a range of core skills and knowledge including working within legal, ethical and regulatory requirements and health and safety. Workers will learn about working with children and families from diverse backgrounds and cultures; health and hygiene principles; nutritional needs for different ages; developing and implementing play experiences; child development stages; and working effectively in a team environment. |
Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care |
---|
For your experienced workers, the Diploma EWT provides high level knowledge of ethical work practices; regulatory and legal compliance; workplace safety and duty of care; planning, implementing and managing programs; meeting children's social, emotional, physical and educational needs; observing and recording behaviour; and working with culturally diverse clients. It's the ideal qualification for upskilling workers into team leader, supervisor or manager roles. |
Civil construction
Your existing workers have valuable skills, knowledge and experience; so it makes good business sense to invest in developing their supervision and leadership skills to build your business capacity, maximise productivity, and oversee key responsibilities such as workplace safety. With so many opportunities across Western Australia now and into the future, including a range of major WA State Government infrastructure and civil construction projects, having skilled and competent leaders in your team will give you that competitive edge.
Certificate IV in Civil Construction Supervision |
---|
This EWT will help to ensure your workers have high level skills and knowledge in workplace safety and risk management; and industry legislation, standards and regulatory requirements. The training will also enable your existing workers to develop high level communication and negotiation skills, and the skills required to effectively lead and supervise a work team and be successful in high level problem solving and troubleshooting. Critical knowledge covered in the EWT includes how to develop, manage and follow project and operational plans; manage contracts; and supervise contractors and sub-contractors. Through this training, you can be confident you'll have people you can rely on to help supervise your projects and your work team to achieve maximum productivity, and grow your business, but also that you're offering a career progression pathway which will help retain your best workers and contribute to the long term success of your business. |
Ageing and individual support
Care and support services have never been more in demand across Australia; particularly in the aged care and disability support fields, and quality service provision has never been more critical — not only for your clients; but also for the success of your business. With the focus on person-centred care enabling and supporting people to live safely and independently in a range of settings including home and community-based care; many aged and disability support service providers are realising the importance of having (and retaining) skilled workers — particularly when it comes to basing assessments and care plans on a foundation of knowledge about issues relating to a client's emotional and physical health and wellbeing.
Certificate III in Individual Support |
---|
If you have new or unqualified workers, this qualification provides a solid foundation of skills and knowledge for workers in the aged care, disability, or individual support sectors — including for clients in residential care or those who are receiving in-home or community-based support. Its focus is on person-centred care; and is aligned with industry best practice and regulations in all aspects of service provision. |
Certificate IV in Ageing Support |
---|
This qualification is ideal for those with experience and for upskilling staff for more senior roles. It provides your existing workers with a deeper understanding of issues concerning aged clients; and high level skills to plan, develop, implement and monitor programs and services; assess client needs; plan and conduct group and recreation programs; and to monitor services, health and safety and policies and procedures in line with required regulations. |
Please note: The 72% reduction in course fees for selected EWTs is funded through the WA State Government, and the Commonwealth Government's JobTrainer Fund. Available places are limited. |
Existing worker traineeships = A skilled workforce
If you're looking for a way to ensure your team is operating efficiently and effectively to consistent standards, and adopting up to date industry practices, existing worker traineeships could be your solution!
Existing worker traineeships are a great way to upskill and develop your workforce. Through structured on the job learning, managed by an accredited TAFE college or private training provider, your team will deepen and broaden their workplace skills and knowledge and get a nationally recognised vocational education and training (VET) qualification.
EWTs are also an excellent way to develop career pathways for your existing workers, through skills-based promotion opportunities, and can also help to build loyalty and long term commitment from your workforce.
What qualifications are available as an EWT?
There's a wide range of qualifications at Certificate IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma level that are currently funded through the WA Department of Training and Workforce Development as an EWT, and these are all available on a list published here on the Jobs and Skills WA website.
- View the full list of existing worker traineeships (select the EWT tab)
How does the traineeship work?
An existing worker traineeship works in much the same way as a regular traineeship. The extent of any off the job training required will be negotiated between yourself, the trainee, and the training provider to ensure that business needs are accommodated.
An Australian Apprenticeship Support Services (AASS) provider will work with you to choose a qualification and a training provider that suits your needs, and will organise all the paperwork for you, including lodging the training contract with the Department of Training and Workforce Development's Apprenticeship Office.
Who delivers the training?
Existing worker traineeships are available through some WA TAFE colleges, and also through selected private registered training organisations (RTOs).
We encourage you to use our course list to search for the qualification you're interested in — select Existing worker traineeship from the Training options filter on the left, to display a list of all EWTs that are currently being delivered in Western Australia.
How does the training work?
- The training provider will usually visit your workplace first, to familiarise themselves with the set up and facilities as well as the kind of work the trainees are doing
- Your trainee/s will be assigned tasks for the units in the EWT, based on their job role and duties — these are usually completed either in a workbook or online
- Your TAFE college or private training provider will negotiate a schedule of workplace visits with you — generally fortnightly or monthly — so they can visit the trainee/s to monitor their progress, and provide mentoring and coaching etc as required
- If you have a number of staff doing an EWT, you may be able to arrange short group training sessions in the workplace — this may be more time efficient for you, your staff, and your business
- Your staff undertaking the traineeship may be eligible for recognition of prior learning — your training provider will help you with this process
- Trainees will be awarded the nominated qualification following a competency-based assessment, in the workplace, where they will be required to demonstrate their skills and knowledge
What is my role in the traineeship?
As the employer; you should be across how the EWT is progressing, and actively encourage and support your trainee/s to stay motivated to complete the traineeship. You should also make sure that others in the workplace are aware that the traineeship is happening, and what it involves, and assist the trainee/s where they can.
It's also very important that you ensure the trainee/s are given sufficient time, and access to resources and facilities where required, for any additional work required as part of the traineeship.
We also encourage you to actively engage with your training provider, and request regular updates as to how the trainees are progressing and/or any issues you should be aware of.
Your AASS provider will discuss your obligations under the training contract with you, before you sign up for the EWT.
Who is an "existing worker"?
In general terms, a person who has already been working for you for more than three months at full time equivalent is considered to be an existing worker, and would be eligible for an existing worker traineeship. A 'full time equivalent’ could be based on part time, casual or full time work; and approved leave is included in the time calculation.
Would my staff be eligible for an EWT?
We encourage you to call our Apprenticeship Office helpline on 13 19 54 if you are unsure about the eligibility of your staff to undertake an existing worker traineeship.
You may find the fact sheet from Apprenticeship Office helpful; and they also have an 'existing worker calculator' to help you work out eligibility.
