Architectual draftsperson

Architectural draftspersons interpret architects’ and designers’ concepts by preparing drawings and plans. They use architects’ sketches and designs to draft complete drawings, often into final working plans or physical and computerised 3-D models. Architectural draftspersons contribute an important part to the building process as their work is often used for building approvals, pricing estimates and construction.

Working conditions

Architectural draftspersons work in offices when drafting plans and designs, but are often required to meet with clients at construction sites (locally, interstate, overseas).  Work conditions can be stressful due to strict project deadlines.

Tools and technologies

Architectural draftspersons use drawing and measuring instruments and materials, as well as computer-aided design (CAD) and modelling software. They may also use a variety of stands, materials and equipment for making and displaying 3-D models of their plans. They often use cameras during site visits.

Education and training

To become an architectural draftsperson you usually need to gain a qualification in residential drafting or building design.
