Start your career creating forever homes, as a draftsperson. Learn about industry trends and practices, creating design concept drawings using industry standard software and programs, construction technology and materials, 3D and computer modelling software and programs, sustainability and environmental design, and more.
This course has everything you need to start your career as a draftsperson or a pathway to studying architecture. You'll gain the knowledge and skills needed to draft single residential scale buildings — single and double storey. This is an area of fantastic jobs growth and opportunity!
You'll learn about industry trends and practices, and how to create working drawings for residential projects using industry standard software and programs. You'll be able to create design concept drawings for residential projects; understand construction technology and materials; use 3D and computer modelling software and programs; and understand contemporary industry considerations such as passive solar design, sustainability and environmental design.
You'll also know the rules and regulations for approvals; Australian Standards within the construction industry; and be able to produce documentation suitable for gaining a building permit accordance with the Building Codes of Australia.
Completion of this nationally recognised and accredited qualification may provide credit towards a relevant higher level qualification or university degree, should you wish to pursue further study in this field.

A career by design
This course will expose you to drafting residential buildings within the building and construction industry. You'll develop the knowledge and skills you'll need to draft residential buildings, both single and double storey. Drafters produce drawings and documentation and use CAD software to draft and document residential Class 1 and 10 building designs.
Our residential drafting qualification provides you with skills that are relevant to current industry trends and practices.
Once you have completed this Certificate IV course you will be able to apply your skills to diverse residential building design projects. You may also choose to progress to the Diploma of Buidling Design.
Delivery location
When you complete this course, you will be ready for a career in residential drafting. This qualification reflects the role of entry level drafters who support building designers and architects. You will have the skills and knowledge to produce drawings and documentation and use CAD software to draft and document residential Class 1 and 10 building designs under the supervision of licensed or accredited building designers or architects.
Practice at this level is underpinned by the knowledge of construction methods and materials and the application of relevant compliance, planning and building requirements for Class 1 and 10 buildings.
Class 1 and 10 building classifications are defined in the National Construction Code (NCC).
Licensing requirements apply to building design in some states or territories. For further information check with the relevant regulatory authority.
