What they do
Rehabilitation counsellors are specialist counsellors who assist people who are physically, mentally and/or socially disadvantaged to participate in employment or education, or to live independently and integrate in the community.
Rehabilitation counsellors provide vocational/workplace assessments, job preparation and placement services, career counselling, rehabilitation and return-to-work services, and disability prevention and management.
People they support include refugees, ex-offenders, disadvantaged youth and those experiencing unemployment due to injury or illness.
Working conditions
Rehabilitation counsellors may be employed in government departments, private occupational rehabilitation companies, non-profit disability agencies, state workers’ compensation authorities, income protection and life insurance companies, compulsory third party insurance companies (CTP) and accident authorities, private practices and private rehabilitation services.
They usually work as part of a team of medical, therapy and related rehabilitation personnel. Most rehabilitation counsellors work in an office environment and work regular hours but may also be required to travel to visit clients.
Tools and technologies
Rehabilitation counsellors may regularly use computers and office equipment to document and maintain records of their interactions with clients. They may also use a range of vocational, physical and psychological tests to assess their clients and determine their needs and progress.
How do I become one?
Education and training
To become a rehabilitation counsellor you usually need to study a degree in rehabilitation counselling, psychology, health science or a related area.

Required registration and licensing
