What they do
Engineering managers plan, coordinate and oversee the technical and engineering activities of an organisation. They are responsible for planning engineering projects and overseeing the efficient running of projects, including providing supervision and guidance to other engineers. Their focus is on goals and the management of issues between business and delivery.
Engineering managers work across a wide range of industries and disciplines. For example, mainstream engineering is often divided into the four broad disciplines of chemical, civil, electrical and mechanical engineering with each area covering a large range of fields.
Working conditions
Working conditions for engineering managers vary greatly depending on the organisation they work for and the industry in which they are employed. However, in most cases engineering managers will spend at least some of their time undertaking administrative and business management duties.
Engineering managers may work all over Western Australia, from remote mine sites to offices in the CBD. They may work on projects that range from designing, construction and maintenance of major structures like ships, heavy earth moving equipment, mobile cranes, offshore oil platforms and buildings.
Tools and technologies
The tools and technologies used by engineering managers will vary significantly depending on the type of work they are doing.
How do I become one?
