Shipboard Safety Skill Set

If you're looking to get into the maritime or shipping industry, this short course will give you excellent job ready skills! Learn how to apply basic survival skills in the event of vessel abandonment; follow procedures to minimise and fight fires on board a vessel; meet work health and safety requirements; and survive at sea using survival craft.

The Shipboard Safety Skill Set forms a crucial part of all maritime qualifications offered from Coxswain Grade II, Coxswain, Master 24 and MED II. This 3 day course covers all of the important emergency procedures required to survive at sea if disaster strikes. The course is intensive, rigorous and physically demanding.

Participants will learn how to:
  • Swim short distances while fully clothed and wearing shoes without the aid of a life jacket
  • Launch a life raft, right an inverted life-raft, climb into the life raft and assist other survivors
  • Successfully use flares, EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) and other emergency equipment
  • Follow evacuation procedures to abandon ship and use survival techniques such as HELP (Heat Escape Lessening Position)
  • Use correct fire extinguisher to extinguish a fire type such as oil fire, electrical fire or plastic fire
  • Understand and practice Occupational Safety and Health workplace procedures

The Elements of Shipboard Safety skill set is a prerequisite for employment on board commercial vessels in domestic waters. This skill set will equip you with the knowledge and skills to operate safely on board a vessel.

The Elements of Shipboard Safety Skill Set is made up of 4 components:

  • MARF027 Apply basic survival skills in the event of vessel abandonment
  • MARF028 Follow procedures to minimise and fight fires on board a vessel
  • MARF029 Meet work health and safety requirements
  • MARF030 Survive at sea using survival craft
