This qualification reflects the role of workers who provide self-directed recovery-oriented support for people affected by mental illness and psychiatric disability. Work involves implementing community-based programs and activities focusing on mental health, mental illness and psychiatric disability. Work is undertaken in a range of community contexts such as community based non-government organisations; home based outreach; centre-based programs; respite care; residential services, rehabilitation programs; clinical settings; or supporting people in employment. Work is carried out autonomously under the broad guidance of other practitioners and professionals.

Develop skills to work with clients experiencing a mental health illness

This qualification focuses on the support and needs of people experiencing mental health issues. You'll learn about the value and principles of the mental health sector and how to apply them in a recovery oriented way.

You will undertake a supervised or simulated work placement* where you will be able to apply the skills and knowledge you have learned.

You could find work in a variety of community contexts such as community based non-government organisations; outreach; centre-based programs; respite care; residential services; rehabilitation programs; clinical settings; or supporting people in employment.

This course will be delivered through a combination of online and on campus training.The online delivery will be done via Collaborate sessions (on Blackboard), which are live classes facilitated by a lecturer. The majority of the training will be delivered via on campus sessions. Class attendance is required for successful completion of the course.

Commence your career in community services with this nationally recognised qualification that will get you started in the sector. This course will train you to support those experiencing a range of mental health issues and begin your journey to working as a Mental Health Support Worker, Community Support Worker, or Case Worker.

Learn how to promote social, emotional and physical wellbeing, respond to critical situations and work collaboratively with carers. You'll grow knowledge of how to implement early intervention, work with those at risk of homelessness and suicide and support the recovery process for clients, helping them to reach personal goals.

Note: This course has a minimum age requirement of 25 years old to be eligible to enter the course, as we are unlikely to secure work placements for anyone under 25 years old.

This qualification is completed one day a week through our live virtual classroom, allowing you to log on from any location.

The Certificate IV in Mental Health is a Jobs & Skills WA government subsidised, Nationally Recognised qualification that will equip you with the knowledge and skills to support, communicate and work with individuals who are suffering with mental health issues. It will train you to promote social, emotional and physical wellbeing and how to respond to critical situations. You’ll investigate intervention strategies and how best to support those at risk. Our trainers will support you through online learning, virtual webinars and on the job placement support. 80 hours of work placement is the minimum requirement for this course. Delivery is available for anyone in WA wanting to upskill in this area.

Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services Ltd. (KAMS) offers annual training for those in the Kimberley region of WA in CHC43315 Certificate IV in Mental Health. The qualification consists of multiple 2 and 3 week study blocks at our campus in Broome as well as local clinical placements over the course of 10 - 12 months. CHC43315 Certificate IV in Mental Health has been structured around making our students’ lives easier. The course is delivered with a mix of live-online, face-to-face training and on-campus events in flexible sessions held on weekends and evenings.
The live-online aspect of the course allows students to interact and engage from the comfort of their own homes, all that is needed is an internet connection and a device capable of running Zoom for our interactive online classes.
Our on-campus events are held at the main campus as well as a beautiful, purpose-made Bush Campus that allows for practical classes, group work, cultural awareness sessions and mental health programs. These sessions take place in Wanneroo.

The CHC43315 Certificate IV in Mental Health course aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and practical work experience to support clients with mental health struggles. At the heart of this course is learning the ‘recovery-oriented approach’, which seeks to support mental health sufferers by encouraging the clients’ personal reflection, growth, and journey. To become qualified in this field, Mental Health Support Workers must understand the legal and ethical frameworks surrounding mental health, have strong cultural and community awareness, and possess practical skills in providing trauma-informed care and self-advocacy. In this fee free course, students will gain knowledge and practical skills to work with people with mental health needs and those experiencing domestic violence and other social issues. Students will learn to assess and promote their clients’ well-being through self-directed recovery and trauma-informed care. Students will also have the skills to provide crisis support, develop an understanding of mental health services and more. Students must meet the eligibility requirements and agree to the mandatory attendance requirements to apply for this course for Job Seekers. You will be considered a 'Job Seeker' if you are unemployed or underemployed (working less than 20 hours a week with one or across multiple employers). Mandatory attendance is 2 days per week.
