This mechanical engineering qualification was specifically developed for existing tradespersons in the engineering field, or for engineering trade apprentices wishing to study at a higher level.
The course covers the skills and knowledge required for employment as:
- a Higher Engineering Tradesperson or a Special Class Engineering Tradesperson (Mechanical) — Level II;
- Special Class Engineering Tradesperson (Fabrication) — Level II; or
- Special Class Engineering Tradesperson (Electrical/Electronic) — Level II.
The skills and knowledge gained through your training can apply to roles within the metal, engineering, manufacturing and associated industries or at equivalent levels in other industries where engineering tradespersons work.
Completion of this qualification may provide credit towards a relevant higher level qualification or university degree, should you wish to pursue further study in this field.

This qualification defines the skills and knowledge required for a higher engineering tradesperson within metal, engineering, manufacturing and associated industries.
The skills associated with this qualification are intended to apply to a wide range of engineering work undertaken in the fields of refrigeration and air conditioning, casting and moulding, computer numerically controlled (CNC) programming, fluid power, heavy fabrication, instrumentation, maintenance, plant mechanics, marine electronics, mechatronics, patternmaking, robotics, toolmaking, welding and watch and clock services and repair, including post-trade work.
It provides the skills and knowledge for a person to understand and implement quality control techniques, exercise good interpersonal and communications skills, work from complex instructions and procedures, exercise discretion within the scope of responsibility, perform work under limited supervision either individually or in a team environment, be responsible for assuring the quality of their own work, provide trade guidance and assistance as part of a work team, perform non-trade tasks which are incidental or peripheral to the primary tasks and facilitate the completion of the whole task, inspect products and/or materials for conformity with established operational standards, operate lifting equipment incidental to their work and assists in the provision of training in conjunction with supervisors and trainers.

Industry Training & Workplace Services, offers the MEM40119 Certificate IV in Engineering, a nationally recognised training and is specifically designed to cover the skills and knowledge required of workers employed as Engineering/Manufacturing Tradesperson – Special Class Level II as defined in the Manufacturing and Associated Industries and Occupations Award. This pathway trains people in post trade studies that gives additional skills to either gain new skills for the trade or to cross train into an associated engineering trade field. This group includes those already working as mechanical maintenance tradespersons, welders, fabrication structural tradespersons, or toolmakers. They have a robust foundation in their respective trades and are eager to develop their skills and knowledge to undertake more advanced engineering responsibilities. Learners may be employed in diverse workplace settings such as manufacturing plants, factories, foundries, distribution centers, and warehousing sites. They are experienced in collaborating with production personnel and are well-acquainted with the demands and challenges of the engineering industry. Some learners in this group may already hold a relevant MEM Manufacturing and Engineering Training Package Certificate III qualification. These individuals have gained competencies through their previous qualifications and can leverage credit recognition to expedite their progress toward completing this higher-level qualification.
