Certificate IV in Engineering
Get qualified as a Higher Engineering Tradesperson; or a Special Class Level II Engineering Tradesperson in Mechanical, Fabrication or Electrical / Electronic specialisations.
This mechanical engineering qualification was specifically developed for existing tradespersons in the engineering field, or for engineering trade apprentices wishing to study at a higher level.
The course covers the skills and knowledge required for employment as:
- a Higher Engineering Tradesperson or a Special Class Engineering Tradesperson (Mechanical) — Level II;
- Special Class Engineering Tradesperson (Fabrication) — Level II; or
- Special Class Engineering Tradesperson (Electrical/Electronic) — Level II.
The skills and knowledge gained through your training can apply to roles within the metal, engineering, manufacturing and associated industries or at equivalent levels in other industries where engineering tradespersons work.
Completion of this qualification may provide credit towards a relevant higher level qualification or university degree, should you wish to pursue further study in this field.

Gain essential skills and knowledge for working with measuring instruments across industries, covering vital functions like pressure, temperature, and flow measurement. Students will develop expertise in intrinsic safety, analytical techniques, and hands-on tasks to maintain, control, and repair complex instruments.

The skills associated with this qualification are intended to apply to a wide range of engineering work undertaken in the fields of refrigeration and air conditioning, casting and moulding, computer numerically controlled (CNC) programming, fluid power, heavy fabrication, instrumentation, maintenance, plant mechanics, marine electronics, mechatronics, patternmaking, robotics, toolmaking, welding and watch and clock services and repair, including post-trade work.
It provides the skills and knowledge for a person to understand and implement quality control techniques, exercise good interpersonal and communications skills, work from complex instructions and procedures, exercise discretion within the scope of responsibility, perform work under limited supervision either individually or in a team environment, be responsible for assuring the quality of their own work, provide trade guidance and assistance as part of a work team, perform non-trade tasks which are incidental or peripheral to the primary tasks and facilitate the completion of the whole task, inspect products and/or materials for conformity with established operational standards, operate lifting equipment incidental to their work and assists in the provision of training in conjunction with supervisors and trainers.
This qualification may be accessed by direct entry. It is assumed that the learner is either already a tradesperson with access to structure on and off-the-job training or is an apprentice under an Australian Apprenticeship arrangement.

This pathway teaches you how to install, service, and repair fixed and mobile plant. Competencies include carrying out engineering measurements and computations, using hand and power tools, planning your work tasks, following safety and sustainability procedures, welding, and engineering hand skills, repairing and maintaining engine cooling systems, working with mobile plant hydraulics and suspension systems.
