When you complete this qualification, you will be looking at an exciting career working on aircraft large and small as an aviation maintenance engineer. You'll learn how to repair, overhaul, test and troubleshoot aircraft mechanical systems, which may include tasks such as:
- the testing of equipment and ground support equipment and troubleshooting faults;
- using technology to obtain maintenance data and complete documentation;
- interpreting wiring diagrams and system schematics;
- the removal and installation of aircraft components; and
- reading drawings relating to maintenance activities.
Depending on your training provider, you will be able to choose units specialising in areas such as helicopter turbine, helicopter piston turbine, turbine fixed wing, turbine fixed wing structures, piston fixed wing pressure-328, helicopter piston-327, piston fixed wing pressure-401, turbine fixed wing turbo fan and piston fixed wing unpressurised.
Completion of this nationally recognised and accredited qualification can provide credit towards a relevant higher level qualification, should you wish to pursue further study. Note: This course is usually available only as an apprenticeship.

Aerospace Training Centre
South Metropolitan TAFE's AeroSpace Training Centre is the largest provider in WA offering training in aircraft maintenance and aviation. Our lecturers have diverse industry backgrounds including international licensed aircraft maintenance engineers, airline transport pilots, airport managers, flight instructors, cabin crew training managers, emergency procedures instructors, RAAF maintenance supervisors, as well as military and commercial aviators and managers.
The fully equipped hangar of the AeroSpace Training Centre at Jandakot Airport has various aircraft engines, workshop stations, computer facilities, a flight simulator, and a number of aircraft including our own Boeing 737.

An aviation apprenticeship/traineeship offers opportunities for you to train, study and earn an income – combining time at work with training (either full-time, part-time or school-based). This is a great learning pathway that combines on the job training and formal training in a qualification delivered by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
When you finish your aviation apprenticeship/traineeship, you’ll have a nationally-recognised qualification that can take you anywhere in Australia, one that’s held in high regard in many overseas countries as well.
Theory training is conducted via block release at the Aviation Australia campus in Jandakot, Western Australia. Training may also be conducted at other campuses if required.
