This qualification is nationally recognised, providing you with future job opportunities to gain employment in the education sector. It is aimed at workers who provide assistance and support to teachers and students in a range of educational settings. These may include public, Catholic and independent schools and community education centres.
You will learn how to effectively communicate with students and colleagues, provide support to students in developing their literacy and numeracy skills and learn how to work collaboratively as part of an educational team. As part of this qualification you will undertake supervised work placement where you will be able to apply the skills and knowledge you have learned.

This course will prepare you for the role of an education assistant working in a school. You will learn to support students in their learning and development from kindergarten to Year 12 under the guidance of a teacher.

This course offers 2 study options to suit your lifestyle and learning preferences:
- On-Campus: Complete the course full-time in 6 months or part-time over 12 months at our Joondalup, Leederville or Midland Campus.
- Online: Study online over 12 months through our BlackBoard platform, with approximately six mandatory on-campus days for practical assessments, simulation, and work placement preparation.
As part of your qualification, you’ll engage in a supervised work placement to apply your newly acquired skills in a real classroom environment. Before starting your placement, you’ll need to obtain a Working with Children Check and a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (Education Department WA). For students studying online, North Metropolitan TAFE facilitates placements within the Perth Metropolitan area only, spanning from Rockingham in the south to Two Rocks in the north and Mundaring in the east.

Participants will learn how to:

Students must be based in the Kimberley or Pilbara region to enrol in this qualification, in order to satisfy the supervised work placement assessment criteria.

Education Assistants play a crucial role in the classroom and your skills will be in-demand, setting you up for a rewarding long-term career helping children learn lifelong skills and grow their independence, whilst positively impacting and shaping the next generation. You have the opportunity to complete the Certificate III in School Based Education Support either full-time, on campus over 6 months, part-time online or on-campus, or part-time on campus over 12 months. The online delivery will be done via Collaborate Sessions (on Blackboard), which are live classes run online with a lecturer taking you through the training. Some on-campus practical components will be required for online students including meetings with your lecturer.

This course requires you to undertake a work placement of approximately 100 hours per semester enrolment where you’ll be able to apply and grow the knowledge you have learned.

Education support workers work mainly with students in classroom settings in primary or secondary schools, as defined by State/Territory legislation.
