Heavy Vehicle Driving Operations Skill Set
Get your HR, HC or MC license and hit the road for your new career! This short course provides the theoretical knowledge required to work as a heavy vehicle driver, and practical driving instruction training for operation of a heavy rigid (HR), heavy combination (HC), or multi-combination (MC) vehicle.

Your training will include not only the theoretical knowledge required to work as a heavy vehicle driver in WA, but also practical driving instruction training for operation of a heavy rigid (HR), heavy combination (HC), or multi-combination (MC) vehicle to get you job ready.
The driving instruction training component will be conducted in a range of conditions and locations, with coaching from qualified and experienced drivers.
On successful completion, you'll obtain a licence for the HR, HC or MC class vehicle and can also apply for a forklift (LF) licence.

This skill set has been designed to promote new entrants and support upskilling of existing workers in the heavy haulage truck driving industry.
In this training program you will learn how to:
- Follow work health and safety procedures
- Carry out inspection of vehicles
- Secure, load and unload cargo of goods
- Apply work fatigue management strategies
- Obtain a forklift licence (subject to meeting Worksafe requirements)
- Obtain a truck licence (subject to meeting Department of Transport requirements)
- Ensure the safety of the transport industry (chain of responsibility).
The driving instruction training component of the program is conducted in a range of conditions and locations, with coaching from qualified and experienced drivers.
Subject to meeting the Department of Transport (DoT) licensing requirements, participants may apply for either a Heavy Rigid, Heavy Combination or Multi Combination Class Vehicle drivers licence. Participants will also need to meet DoT's eligibility requirements.(opens in a new tab)
Entry requirements Participants must complete all 8 units of competency including the one relevant class licence unit. The participant must meet the required licence authorisation for their selected vehicle class licence as set out below:Please Note: L Plate and P Plate Licence holders are ineligible for the Heavy Vehicle Driving Skill Set.
- Heavy Rigid (HR) Class Licence
HR Licence Unit: TLIC3004 Drive Heavy Rigid VehicleParticipants must hold:- A Car (C) Class Licence for at least two years, or- A Light Rigid (LR) Class Licence for at least one year, or - A Medium Rigid (MR) Class Licence for at least one year.
- Heavy Combination (HC) Class Licence
HC Licence Unit: TLIC3005 Drive Heavy Combination VehicleParticipants must hold:- A Car (C) Class Licence for at least three years, and- A Medium Rigid (MR) or Heavy Rigid (HR) Licence for at least one year.
- Multi-Combination (MC) Class Licence
MC Licence Unit: TLIC4006 Drive Multi-Combination VehicleParticipants must hold:- A Car (C) Class Licence for at least three years, and- A Heavy Rigid (HR) or Heavy Combination Licence for at least one year.
