Adolescence can be a challenging and transitional time for young people and many may experience mental health and behavioural issues or disorders they need support with, whilst working out their identity on the journey into adulthood. Youth at risk or in crisis can need practical support such as food, shelter, safety, along with counselling to help them get on to a more positive path in their lives.
You’ll learn from our expert team of lecturers on how to be a role model and mentor to teenagers and children and respond to youth in crisis. You’ll gain the knowledge to assess problems that arise from behavioural, developmental, welfare and protection issues and develop and manage youth programs that address issues and provide ongoing support. At the end of this course, you will have the skills to facilitate and review case management, analyse the impacts of sociological factors on people in community work and services, and engage respectfully with young people.
Youth workers are in high demand and can work at community, government and welfare agencies in settings such as hospitals, schools, corrective institutions, youth refuges, community centres, mental health organisations or drug and alcohol centres.

The CHC50421 Diploma of Youth Work course covers all areas that affect young people’s well-being, including their social, behavioural, health, welfare, developmental and protection needs. This course also identifies and explores the critical issues faced by Australia’s youth, including mental health issues, crises, children/youth at risk of harm, and family violence. To equip students to respond to these issues, the qualification focuses on reaching people through youth support programs and care services. Students in this course will learn practical skills in developing rapport and trusting relationships with young people, facilitating group activities, conducting assessments and developing individual case plans. This course also provides students with a comprehensive understanding of external agencies and support services available for assisting at-risk youth and when youth workers should utilise them during case management. Students will be required to complete 200 hours of work placement to gain exposure and coaching within a real-world setting. Students must meet the eligibility requirements and agree to the mandatory attendance requirements to apply for the Lower Fees, Local Skills subsidy. Attendance requirements for Existing Workers are: You will be considered an ‘Existing Worker’ if you work 20 or more hours for a single or multiple employers.
