Develop the skills to work with clients experiencing a mental health illness

You will learn about current approaches to mental health that focus on the person not the illness. The Diploma of Mental Health will enable you to undertake community service work that includes mental health.

Working in the community services industry you will provide services to clients in relation to mental health issues that may include case management, referral, advocacy, individual support, and education/health promotion services.

This course will be delivered through a combination of online and on campus training.The online delivery will be done via Collaborate sessions (on Blackboard), which are live classes run online with a lecturer taking you through the training.

The qualification is delivered over 7 blocks of three weeks each of face-to-face classroom delivery and includes a 160-hour mandatory work placement. The CHC53315 Diploma of Mental Health course equips you with the practical skills and knowledge to support people affected by mental health struggles. Students will be introduced to a wide range of theories and frameworks in mental health, as well as hands-on practical experience in the field. Students will learn the practical skills in supporting, communicating, and working with individuals experiencing mental health issues, responding to critical situations, making support plans, referring clients to services and much more. This course also equips students with specialised knowledge, competencies, and skills to take a lead role in delivering and coordinating mental health programs and services. Students will learn the current legal and ethical frameworks affecting people with mental health, the range of services available for mental health sufferers, as well as gaining an understanding of the health issues related to mental illness. Students must meet the eligibility requirements and agree to the mandatory attendance requirements to apply for the Lower Fees, Local Skills subsidy. Attendance requirements are as follows for Existing Workers. Existing Worker: You will be considered an 'Existing Worker' if you work 20 or more hours for the same employer.
