Diploma of Interior Design

Get the skills you need for the job you want creating beautiful spaces, and design yourself an exciting career working as an interior designer for both residential and commercial settings with skills in colour and lighting schemes, design briefs, creating digital simulations and project documentation, 2D and 3D modelling, sustainable practice in the design industry, and more.

Interior design is so much more than making a space look nice — it requires creativity as well as technical skills and knowledge, and that's why you need this course!

With this training, you'll study all aspects of interior design to suit both residential and commercial settings including colour schemes, lighting schemes, design briefs, creating digital simulations and project documentation, 2D and 3D modelling, and how to prepare quotes and contract documentation for design projects. You'll also learn about sustainable practice in the design industry.

You'll graduate with a design portfolio to present to prospective employers or clients.

Note: This course is best suited for people who already have some background or experience in this field. If you're unsure, please seek advice from the training provider to see whether this course is the right choice for you.

Completion of this qualification may provide credit towards a relevant higher level qualification or university degree, should you wish to pursue further study.

It's what's on the inside that counts

The Diploma of Interior Design will give you an understanding of the nature of environmental space and spatial ambience, with the ability to manipulate the relationship of spaces, objects and products within the surrounding space. You'll develop the ability to approach a variety of design problems with creativity, a high level of competence and sensitivity to the requirements of the design brief.

This two-year qualification provides the practical skills and knowledge to develop a range of decoration and design services and provide interior design advice. Design projects enable the development of spatial planning skills to design some residential, commercial and institutional interiors.

You will be working on simulated live projects with many different briefs from a wide range of industry disciplines. There are also opportunities to participate in industry visits and enter competitions that also engages with industry.

As a graduate, you will be well prepared to enter into the workforce as a design consultant or continue to the Advanced Diploma to develop high level skills as interior designers.

This course in only offered in Semester 1 each year and will take 2 years (4 semesters) to complete studying full-time.

North Metropolitan TAFE is an Educational Member of the Design Institute of Australia (DIA). This qualification is listed as a recognised course on the DIA website(opens in a new tab) .
