Course in Gaining Access to Training and Employment (GATE) (Introductory)

This course is perfect for anyone who has been out of work for a while, or needs to build up their employability skills to improve job prospects — it will boost your skills and confidence to get that job!

The Certificate I in Gaining Access to Training and Employment (GATE) is a pre-employment program that will build your skills and confidence in communication, numeracy (maths), technology; and also offers you career and personal development. It's perfect for anyone who has been out of work for a while, or needs to build up their employability skills to improve job prospects.  

The course varies in what extra areas it covers, depending on the TAFE or training provider who is running it. For example; some TAFEs will include guest speakers and visits to workplaces in particular industry areas.

The course in Gaining Access to Training and Employment (GATE) (Introductory) is a bridging/preparatory course enabling learners to extend their general education, prior to entering a range of vocational training programs, employment or community participation.

Students enrol in either the Introductory GATE course, or the general GATE course, depending upon their individual skill levels prior to commencing. The way the course is delivered depends on the needs of the student. This introductory course allows you to extend your knowledge and skills in communication, numeracy, technology, study skills and personal development.

You will develop skills in;

  • Communicating effectively
  • Applying maths to everyday tasks
  • Operating a computer
  • Participating in your community
  • Applying study techniques
  • Improving your confidence, setting goals
  • Managing your personal growth and raising your self-esteem.

Participants will learn about:

  • Communication skills
  • Practical numeracy
  • Personal Development
  • Basic digital technology

This course is available at other campus locations upon request.

The Introductory GATE Program is designed for young individuals who have faced challenges in traditional education settings. This course focuses on re-engaging students by building foundational literacy and numeracy skills, alongside essential personal and social competencies. It helps learners develop a positive attitude toward learning, discover their unique strengths, and overcome barriers that have hindered their academic progress.   The program emphasizes real-life skills, covering areas such as communication, self-regulation, independent living, and technology. Through a hands-on and supportive learning environment, students are encouraged to explore their potential and build the confidence needed to succeed in more advanced training, such as the Certificate I in General Education for Adults (CGEA) or the Certificate I in Gaining Access to Training and Employment (GATE).   By offering tailored support and structured activities, the Introductory GATE Program aims to create a clear pathway for students to transition into further education or vocational training, helping them to achieve their educational and career goals.
