Learn how to mentor and support Indigenous staff, fostering cultural safety and community engagement, and empower individuals to achieve study and career goals, enhance self-governance, and improve employment retention within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

This nationally recognised and accredited qualification is designed for both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and non-Indigenous people who want to develop skills to mentor within these communities. 

The focus of this training is on the skills and knowledge required to mentor and support Indigenous staff, fostering cultural safety and community engagement. It aims to empower individuals to achieve study and career goals, enhance self-governance, and improve employment retention within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, benefiting both Indigenous and non-Indigenous learners and the broader community. It covers the following key areas. 
 

  • Cultural knowledge: Understand Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identity and cultural protocols.
  • Building relationships: Master the steps to initiate, establish, and close mentoring relationships.
  • Mentoring skills: Gain the ability to support social, community, and employment outcomes.
  • Communication: Develop inclusive and culturally appropriate interpersonal skills for use with individuals and in the community.
  • Networking and negotiation: Learn to effectively network and negotiate within diverse communities.

Empower Communities

This qualification is designed for both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and non-Indigenous learners who want to develop skills to mentor within these communities. 

What You’ll Learn: 

  • Mentoring Skills: Gain the ability to support social, community, and employment outcomes.
  • Cultural Knowledge: Understand Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identity and cultural protocols.
  • Communication: Develop inclusive and culturally appropriate interpersonal skills.
  • Networking & Negotiation: Learn to effectively network and negotiate within diverse communities.
  • Mentoring Process: Master the steps to initiate, establish, and close mentoring relationships. 

Learners will be asked to complete a Client Needs Summary during the enrolment process. If they identify any limitations that could impact on their study an interview with a lecturer will be arranged to identify and plan actions with the student to address these limitations. 

Potential students may be required to obtain the following before attending work experience: 

  • Working with Children’s Check
  • National Police Clearance
