This is an interesting specialisation within the field of vehicle servicing and mechanics, which offers a range of fantastic job opportunities across big industry sectors such as mining and civil construction.
You'll learn a range of knowledge and skills including how to diagnose and identify faults across vehicle systems including engine, steering, hydraulic, ignition, braking and transmission; and service and repair the mechanical parts of heavy commercial vehicles such as transmissions, suspension, steering, and brakes. Training is delivered in a modern workshop with industry standard tools and equipment, on actual vehicles.
Completion of this nationally recognised and accredited qualification can provide credit towards a relevant higher level qualification, should you wish to pursue further study. Note: This course is usually available only as an apprenticeship.

From dump trucks, bulldozers, drilling rigs, to heavy plant machinery, heavy automotives need servicing just like any other automotive. Like with light vehicles, there are many parts that ensure the smooth operation of heavy vehicles. And with heavy machinery, it’s important to ensure that all parts are fully functional, from the cooling systems, the mechanical equipment, the engine, the steering and suspension systems, and even the electrical circuits.
You will have the broad range of skills and knowledge to work effectively in the industry, including diagnosing and repairing drivelines, drive assemblies, engines, suspension, brakes, hydraulics, pneumatic systems, steering, wiring and circuits, welding, thermal cutting, and workplace safety and health.

When you complete this course, you will be ready for a career in the heavy automotive sector. You will have the skills and knowledge to carry out diagnostic procedures and undertake appropriate repairs, identifying and applying safe work practices in the heavy automotive industry. This course will expand your knowledge and practical skills specific to heavy commercial vehicles, including steering, braking and hydraulic systems. (NB. You will need to be employed and registered as an apprentice/trainee before you can undertake this course).

This qualification is an Australian Apprenticeship qualification and is for those who work in, or are looking for, a career in the heavy commercial vehicle repair industry. You will develop your knowledge and skills in servicing, mechanical repairs, diagnostic techniques and electronic management systems. You will be given the opportunity to learn on some of the most up to date vehicles on the market, using the latest tools, equipment and computerised diagnostic machines. In the workplace you will apply your knowledge and practical skills to safely repair and service engines, transmissions, drive-lines, steering and suspension systems, pneumatic and hydraulic systems, air and hydraulic braking systems as well as fuel injection and electrical circuits and systems to name a few. Successful completion of this course will gain you a Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology and enable you to continue your career in the industry completing vehicle safety and roadworthy inspections, carrying out repairs and advanced diagnostic tasks whilst you progress your career as a technician, supervisor or business owner. Delivered using a block release or day release training model from our Perth Training Centre you will have up to 48 months to complete the qualification. Already have experience?
