Certificate III in Hairdressing

Your future as a qualified hairdresser starts here! This course will give you job ready skills and knowledge, to start work in a hairdressing salon.

This qualification will provide the practical skills and knowledge to work in a hairdressing salon using clippers or scissors for cutting; to shampoo, condition and rinse hair; and to dry and style hair using brushes, combs, rollers and other equipment.

You'll also learn skills to operate a cash register and computer, perform reception duties such as answering telephone calls, making appointments, and write up client record cards.

Completion of this nationally recognised and accredited qualification can provide credit towards a relevant higher level qualification, should you wish to pursue further study. The Certificate IV in Hairdressing is generally accepted as the preferred qualification for hairdressers, as it covers a more comprehensive and advanced suite of skills and techniques, however completion of this course is an excellent pathway into an apprenticeship.

When you successfully complete the Certificate III in Hairdressing, you will gain the practical skills and knowledge needed to work as a qualified hairdresser in a salon. 

Hairdressers are skilled in using a variety of tools and products to create desired hairstyles, including scissors, razors, blow dryers, curling irons, and various hair care products. They consult with clients to understand their preferences and recommend suitable hairstyles based on factors such as face shape, hair texture, and lifestyle. Additionally, hairdressers provide hair care advice and recommend products to maintain the health and appearance of clients' hair between appointments.

It is recommended that the Certificate III in Hairdressing be undertaken as an apprenticeship, allowing participants to gain hands-on experience in a salon environment while completing their training. For more information, please see the Apprenticeship section for more information.For those wishing to upgrade an older qualification or use skills obtained overseas to achieve an Australian qualification, an On-campus pathway is available.

This course offers an immersive, real-world experience in our state-of-the-art salons located in Karratha and Broome. 

Students will have the opportunity to work directly with real clients, gaining confidence while using the latest industry tools, equipment, and techniques. Additionally, students will be trained in key salon operations—consulting with clients, managing product sales, and handling financial transactions.   Beyond technical skills, this course will prepare students for the business side of hairdressing, covering topics such as maintaining client relationships, operating salon software, and managing workflow. Upon completion, students will be equipped with a diverse skill set that enables them to make informed decisions, exercise discretion, and take full responsibility for their role in any salon environment.

Please note: This course is open for public enrolments. Apprentices will already be employed in a salon full-time and working under a Training Contract. It will be beneficial to students not working under a Training Contract to seek their own work experience.

When you complete the Certificate III in Hairdressing you will be a cut above the rest as a hairdresser.

This progressive program, developed from the need for a technically specific and practical curriculum is structured to develop your style, for your career. To ensure that the apprentice and employer’s needs are always met, Taylorweir maintains a collaborative relationship with employers and provides a flexible learning environment.

Off the job training can be delivered one day a week for two years or in blocks of 2 or 4 weeks over a two year period
