Work in the automotive industry as an automotive electrical technician

You will be required to complete the Certificate III in Automotive Electrical Technology when you are employed as an apprentice automotive electrical technician. This course will give you a broad range of skills and knowledge to work effectively in the automotive industry servicing, diagnosing and repairing electrical systems and components in a range of vehicles.

Automotive students at the Midland campus enjoy quality facilities, including modern vehicles, specialised diagnostic equipment, and fully equipped classrooms and workshops.

Learn in specialised facilities

South Metropolitan TAFE's Carlisle Campus is WA's major centre for automotive and panel beating studies. Automotive apprentices and pre-apprentices enjoy state of the art facilities, including new vehicles, specialised repair and diagnostic equipment, fully equipped spray painting ovens, specialised workrooms and workshops. This excellent training program is highly competitive.

When you complete this course you will be ready for a career in the automotive industry. You will have the skills and knowledge to service, diagnose and repair electrical systems and components in vehicles in the automotive electrical service and repair industry.  You will need to be employed and registered as an apprentice/trainee before you can undertake this course. This course may also be available through Recognition of Prior Learning to eligible applicants.

Successful completion of the qualification can be used for formal trade recognition in the automotive industry.  This qualification includes automotive air conditioning and refrigeration units, sufficient to cover all of the requirements of Certificate II in Automotive Air Conditioning Technology and will enable the holder to apply for an unrestricted automotive air conditioning licence from ARC.

This qualification is delivered as part of apprenticeship contract and is delivered by institutional off-the-job and on-the-job training. Successful completion of the qualification and apprenticeship contract allows the student to apply for a trade certificate as an Automotive Electrician. The qualification provides the skills and knowledge necessary to install, diagnose and repair electrical systems. To future-skill the apprentice, elective units covering Battery and Hybrid Electric vehicle Depower and Repower, and automotive air conditioning are also offered.
