The world of engineering is very exciting, and offers fantastic job and career opportunities in a wide range of occupations. This nationally recognised and accredited  qualification will give you the knowledge and skills to improve your prospects of employment in an engineering or related occupation.

You'll also gain entry level skills and knowledge to be job ready, including occupational health and safety in the workplace; how to undertake basic engineering projects; using a range of workshop machines and hand and power tools; and the use of different welding and fabrication equipment for specific jobs. Get ready for an exciting career in engineering!

Completion of this course can provide credit towards a relevant higher level qualification, should you wish to pursue further study. It's also an excellent pathway to an apprenticeship or traineeship in this industry.

Get ready for an exciting career in engineering!

The world of engineering is very exciting and offers fantastic job and career opportunities in a wide range of occupations.

This qualification will give you the knowledge and skills to improve your prospects of employment in an engineering or related occupation. You will learn about the industry, so that you can have a better understanding of what particular area of engineering you would like to get into.

You will also gain entry level skills and knowledge to be job ready, including occupational health and safety in the workplace; how to undertake basic engineering projects; using a range of workshop machines and hand and power tools; and the use of different welding and fabrication equipment for specific jobs.

This qualification includes a work experience component which learners must complete as part of their training and assessment. Students are required to complete 40 hours in the workplace.

  • Work experience can be in any of the trade areas (Light, Heavy, Fabrication /welding, machining workshops).
  • A Work experience manual is provided by Central Regional TAFE, and hours are logged by the students. The lecturer will transpose the information for tracking purposes.
  • Students undertaking unpaid work experience are covered under the College’s insurance policy with the Insurance Commission of Western Australia (RiskCover).

Kick-start a career in Fabrication or Mechanical Engineering.

This course is part of our Koomba Bridal program, designed specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander candidates looking to start a career in Fabrication or Mechanical Engineering Trades. This course prepares you for entry into an apprenticeship, equipping you with the foundational skills employers are looking for.

You’ll learn through a hands-on program centred around a major project, building practical skills even if you don’t yet have access to a workplace. Delivered in a simulated work environment that mirrors real industry conditions, the course helps you develop confidence and capability before stepping onto a job site.

Throughout the program, you’ll gain a broad skill set informed by industry input, keeping you job-ready across sectors such as mining, shipbuilding, manufacturing, fabrication, and mechanical engineering. Whether your goal is to secure an apprenticeship or explore different pathways in the industry, this qualification provides a strong starting point.

The training focuses on developing trade-like skills rather than full trade-level competency. You’ll learn essential workplace safety practices, how to identify hazards, and standard workshop procedures -knowledge every future tradesperson needs.

By the end of the course, you’ll be well-prepared to take the next step into an apprenticeship and begin your journey in the engineering trades.

This course equips graduates with the knowledge and skills to enhance their prospects of employment in an engineering or related working environment.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Undertake basic engineering projects

This course is not currently available at any private training providers.
