Develop building skills to support your community
This course is part of our Koomba Birdal program, designed specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander candidates looking to start a career in construction. It prepares participants for employment in the building and construction industry, including roles such as trades assistant, remote area maintenance officer, construction labourer, or entry into an apprenticeship. You’ll gain practical, hands-on construction skills to support your pathway into the industry.
You'll gain hands on experience and gain confidence to carry out building maintenance and repair work, developing skills that are directly relevant to your community. Throughout the course, you’ll learn how to safely use tools and equipment, apply workplace health and safety practices, and work effectively and sustainably on construction projects.
You’ll also build practical trade skills, including preparing surfaces for painting, repairing wall and floor tiles, and gaining introductory concreting experience. Along the way, you’ll strengthen your teamwork and communication skills, and develop the confidence to contribute meaningfully on site.
This training focuses on developing practical, trade-like skills rather than full trade-level competency. You’ll also learn how to identify hazards and follow standard construction procedures—essential knowledge for any future construction worker.
By the end of the course, you’ll be ready to take the next step into into employment in building and construction, particularly in remote and rural communities.
