Study in specialist facilities
SM TAFE is the only TAFE to offer a live veterinary clinic based at our Bentley campus which is open to the general public, staff and students to make bookings for consults and surgeries. Students can gain on-the-job skills in animal care with a range of species including dogs, rabbits, rats, guinea pigs, lizards, fish, along with an aviary housing various birdlife. The clinic allows development of skills in a safe and supported environment.
Our Murdoch campus has a dedicated dog day-care training facility and pet grooming clinic where students can develop hands-on animal care skills in a real-world setting. Mandurah campus also has a modified version of a dog day-care, which represents a short-stay facility for dogs.

Jump start your career in Animal Care with a Certificate II in Animal Care Traineeship! Are you an animal lover with a passion for care and a desire to jump start your career? Look no further than a Certificate II Animal Care Traineeship! This unique opportunity allows you to pursue your love for animals while gaining valuable skills, experience and a qualification while working in paid employment. This traineeship qualification is suited to entry level and support roles in the animal care and management industry, where workers provide care for animals in workplaces such as animal shelters, boarding/day care facilities, sanctuaries and veterinary clinics. This course combines face-to-face classroom instruction and on-line self-study delivered by AVT to compliment the on-the -job training provided by your animal care workplace. Trainees will be required to attend the AVT campus in Ascot for training instruction throughout the traineeship, consisting of theoretical studies and some practical exercises. Following on campus instruction, you will have time to consolidate your knowledge in your workplace. Eligible students may obtain subsidised fees under Jobs and Skills WA, find out more on the AVT website. AVT is a locally owned and operated Registered Training Organisation (RTO 5723) and has been delivering animal care qualifications for over 25 years.
