Certificate II in Agriculture

Gain skills and knowledge in animal handling including horsemanship and cattle management; fencing, station and machinery maintenance; weed and crop management; livestock handling; and how to operate quad bikes, tractors, and front-end loaders. This course is the perfect hands on training to start your career in agriculture or farming. 

This nationally recognised and accredited qualification will give you job ready skills for roles in rural and regional Australia, and supporting job roles in agriculture on farms or stations, including livestock production, cropping, livestock, how to operate quad bikes, tractors, and front-end loaders, apply chemicals and crop establishment. Job roles vary across different industry sectors and may include:

  • assistant animal attendant/stockperson;
  • assistant farm or station hand/worker/labourer;
  • assistant farm fencing contractor;
  • farm machinery worker;
  • Jillaroo/Jackaroo; or
  • saleyard livestock worker.

The qualification is perfect for secondary school students or people with no previous connection the agriculture industry or relevant employment history, as it covers all of the essential skills and knowledge to get started in this industry.

Throughout this Qualification, students will undertake practical training, reflecting the cycle of work on a cattle station. 

Participants will undertake a range of activities including:

  • Preparing for the mustering season
  • Livestock mustering, handling and husbandry activities
  • End-of-year maintenance

Students will gain comprehensive knowledge of animal handling techniques including horsemanship and cattle management, fencing, station and machinery maintenance, and weed management skills. This Qualification can lead participants on an exciting path from year 1 stockman, to head stockman and eventually, station manager.

This course is not campus-based but delivered upon request to organisations on rural properties across the Kimberley and Pilbara regions. Please contact us for more information.

If you are interested in gaining hands-on agricultural training, this program is designed for you. Our Certificate II in Agriculture provides a general introduction to agriculture skills and techniques. This qualification enables individuals to select a livestock production, cropping or livestock context as a job focus or, in the case of mixed farming enterprises, both cropping and livestock.

South Regional TAFE is transitioning this qualification to the new training package in 2025. If your preferred campus is not list, check the previous course page Certificate II in Agriculture | South Regional TAFE. Students will be enrolled into the new units developed to meet current and future industry needs. Fees may vary for courses transitioning to the new training package.
